Written and recorded at home, as part of the Social Distance Songwriting Series, organized by Oliver Ralli. The song is about what I'm seeing right now, as I walk around my corner of NYC, face-mask firmly attached, in early April, 2020.
I lifted the chord progression lifted from my wife's music theory book. Apparently, it's nondiatonic.
lyrics
WORDS:
I take a walk on these zombie streets
I haven’t seen anyone haven’t breathed a thing
Garbage bags still vibrate with rats
Shuffle past the rubber gloves, the surgical masks
In the city that sleeps
I don’t want to be scared
I want all my friends to be drinking with me
They’re home watching TV
The pause
We’re waiting for a plague to come
_____
The pause was deafening
Sirens screamed
I held my breath as the ambulance passed
Count my blessings I guess
Numbers on the radio
Alcohol and cotton balls
Gives me a sense of control
Smell like a hospital
This is really happening
Fresh-turned earth in Ridgewood, Queens
Here’s a witness report
At least the gravediggers work
Everything I need is lain down at my door
I’ve never felt so alone
I’m a moss-growing stone
Padlocks on playground gates
I don’t want to die alone
On an oxygen tank
The pause
We’re waiting for the end to start
_______
The A/C hums along with me
Keeps me company
Gives me air to breathe
