Redbeards

about

Sometime in the late oughts I got the chance to tour the world with a band that hadn't done anything to deserve it. We had no fans, we never even put out a record, yet there we were: hop-scotching all over Europe on the festival circuit (we flew Ryan Air, but still), feted by promoters and booking agents, boozing it up all day long, drugging it up all night long, and waking up early to nurse our hangovers in airport lounges. Even at the time, it felt like we were the last gasp of a very different music industry that vouchsafed terrible behavior with a “Mick and Keef innit” wink and a boys-will-be-boys elbow to the ribs. It was ridiculous and unsustainable and ended almost as soon as it started.

This song’s about all that.

lyrics

Redbeards waking up and first things first
Every morning wash tequila off in the fresh water surf
We’re on our way to work

Richard’s face has fallen off a cliff
Takes a lot of cocaine courage to
Feel natural in his skin
My friends all shake their heads

They wonder why I’m playing with these guys

All bad poetry aside
It’s nice to have a little life before you die
And it could end tonight

Driving through the falling snow
Free jazz on the stereo
We might not make soundcheck but we never miss a show
The prairie ends, the city lights begin

Every night on stage I knock on wood
If you aren’t as high as us it doesn’t sound as good
We killed last night, no witnesses in sight

No good motives are ascribed
To boys in bands they always have bad appetites
We’re not wicked in our bones
We’re just five boys who want to be The Rolling Stones
All bad poetry aside
It’s nice to have a little life before you die

Redbeards at the airport running late
Better finish off the blow before we fly to Spain
Let’s have a drink, there’s always another plane

We’ll have a laugh, enjoy it while it lasts
