Upstate 02:13
Tried to make you see Stalled out on the BQE Everyone’s so crazy in this town Followed you upstate Miss Prom Queen 1988 You really got a grip on me now I found a flyer on a lamppost with my face on it We were living like two ghosts out here where town gets thin Lost in the undertow and don’t know how to swim Everyone’s obscene They’ll tell you what the future means But they will only love you when you’re gone Tell me something nice Give me lots of bad advice We can only hide here for so long I found a flyer on a lamppost with my face on it We were living like two ghosts out here where town gets thin Lost in the undertow and don’t know how to swim Take some time to heal Cast your line where the water’s still No one is afraid for you to change

We sailed like kites down ink black streets We kept the lights off Like wine-dark sharks We’re out for blood Boy Scout blue and Girl Scout green You see right through me You threw me Can’t tell you anything We saw the sun come rising through the trees Around the bend we beelined it Resigned to this I told the cop we were on our honeymoon We laughed for miles Across state lines And East Ohio Build the bridges taller so we think We see the sea descending We’re ending

Slow Season 03:50
Must have been a rainy spring Because the pears are raining on everything It’s hard to think back that far When we’re putting pears into canning jars This morning I sat outside all alone Felt the first chill of winter seep deep in my bones And then everything died at once This garden’s a graveyard for the next five months But the bloom’s not off our love This winter I know who I’ll be keeping warm We’ll build an igloo in New York The cats are playing hard to get Flinging themselves over the neighbor’s fence We wonder what they’re hiding from And how their tiny hearts keep pumping blood Back in the vacuum our hearts are assuaged By the rust in the dust and the patterns it makes They won’t get far The universe revolves around our backyard And before this autumn falls We’ve got some big decisions to ignore We mean to sleep on everything And the bloom’s not off our love This winter I know who I’ll be keeping warm We’ll build an igloo in New York

Trad Atonal 03:17
The car’s gone far enough Dead spots on the radio In the poetry olympics You’re the only one who’s listening Close enough to be an honest judge You said something about guardrails There’ll be time enough to argue when we’re there Megachurches rise like foxgloves in the irrigated dust We’re the true believers I drank a bit too much By the time we get to Venus I’ll be ready for my screen test Hold me up The only way to catch mosquitos is to let them catch you first Just be still and breathe in Megachurches rise like foxgloves in the irrigated dust We’re the true believers No one here believes us I devour you You devour me Like two black holes Without a sense of urgency The jokes gone far enough I’ll show you where your timing’s off You remind me of a person That I used to be before I Fucked it up The only way to catch mosquitos is to let them catch you first Just be still and breathe in Megachurches rise like foxgloves in the irrigated dust We’re the true believers But no one here believes us

Truces 03:02
We should renegotiate our truces In the morning light I see New lines across our faces Old records on repeat We should take a turn around the pasture Find a fence to mend We’ll let the fields lie fallow Have the grace to sleep on them We go by hook and ladder Just above everyone we love At least we have each other I guess love is just a law of averages We knew what we wanted A quilt against the cold What doesn’t drown you makes you taller What doesn’t kill you makes you old We sleep with one eye open Time is hell we just become ourselves At least we have each other Love is just a law of averages
6.
Break + Burn 04:30
I don’t know why you try to forget my gift of love Because it burns it like a sun And everything reeks of fumes When it shines on you I don’t see no reason for to break and for to burn But where the story goes I can’t be so sure anymore I’m not so sure I could have killed you But the corduroy gave me away The corridor sang Clear as canaries you knew I was coming When I get there Come up for air Curl up inside of me Curl up inside of me It’s always the best swimmers who drown And you want to break And you want to burn You’re checking your watch You’re tired of waiting to wake up You already want it to happen You already want it to happen But I’ve got my hands in your hair You already want it to happen You already want it to happen ‘Cause I won’t be what you want from me
7.
Metronome 03:52
You were reading Dharma Bums At least pretending to We weigh about as much light as empty envelopes The speed made us weightless The underground went back under the ground I hope they let us stay there Floating through a Boston fog I always say your name Your face lit up like a driving range at night Lit up like a prison in the desert At the edges I’m not going anywhere with you I’m not going anywhere without you Your heart beats like a metronome I would rather be alone than hurt you We never learn The better bridge to burn Your best worst case scenario is me But we’re afraid of a memory Tiny hearts are sparrow fed The words are barely there What if I made you hear this with your hands Or as music? I’m not going anywhere with you I’m not going anywhere without you Your heart’s a metronome And I would rather be alone than hurt you We never learn The better bridge to burn My worst best case scenario is you It all looks worse in the rear view

Redbeards 03:43
Redbeards waking up and first things first Every morning wash tequila off in the fresh water surf We’re on our way to work Richard’s face has fallen off a cliff Takes a lot of cocaine courage to Feel natural in his skin My friends all shake their heads They wonder why I’m playing with these guys All bad poetry aside It’s nice to have a little life before you die And it could end tonight Driving through the falling snow Free jazz on the stereo We might not make soundcheck but we never miss a show The prairie ends, the city lights begin Every night on stage I knock on wood If you aren’t as high as us it doesn’t sound as good We killed last night, no witnesses in sight No good motives are ascribed To boys in bands they always have bad appetites We’re not wicked in our bones We’re just five boys who want to be the Rolling Stones All bad poetry aside It’s nice to have a little life before you die Redbeards at the airport running late Better finish off the blow before we fly to Spain Let’s have a drink, there’s always another plane We’ll have a laugh Enjoy it while it lasts

Deep Tracks 01:48
A life should leave deep tracks: ruts where she went out and back to get the mail or move the hose around the yard; where she used to stand before the sink, a worn-out place; beneath her hand the china knobs rubbed down to white pastilles; the switch she used to feel for in the dark almost erased. Her things should keep her marks. A worn-out place; beneath her hand The passage of a life should show; it should abrade. And when life stops, a certain space— however small — should be left scarred by the grand and damaging parade. However small — Things shouldn’t be so hard.

Nighttime begins and I’m lonely again and The nurse pours another two fingers of gin We were so sure we were slurring our words Placing bets on which beds we’d sleep in Stuck in my skin I could use some new friends ‘cause My old ones all drank the poison Sneaking around I write everything down i'm a terrible spy cause I hate what I’ve found It’s hard to sleep with the sun in our eyes Things break down by design She’s a carousel out of control I’m a parallel line She's just a ghost to me mostly memory A footprint in falling snow I’m still taking her cues and waiting for news To make its way back to my barstool Drunk violins in the alley again They’re crying ‘cause the night has to end Some nights I guess I can only say yes Yes to my friends and yes to my enemies It’s hard to sleep with the sun in our eyes Things break down by design She’s a carousel out of control I’m a parallel line On a steady decline

Ruins 03:03
I’m already here I’m outside and You can feel me in the air Take your time I’m beside myself But I can wait for years The car comes to life With some reluctance And we should keep good company We’re driving alongside of a train We’ll keep up for awhile Time ramps up You should keep your eye on A fixed point in the past You looked up You said maybe this is heaven Before the weather passed Rule of thumb is You walk down to ruins The rain beats down Steady as a drum I catch your eyes flash in the mirror The summer’s already done A black country night In the company of me And your favorite song For your whole life You love people and You never really know Who they are
12.
Yr Sunburn 04:22
Waking up to no dreams Pour yourself in old jeans Like water in a bowl Lighting up the suburbs Your psychedelic sunburn Surrounds you like a glow You miss your brother He’ll be back this summer Then you’ll hate him once again Every night’s a black hole And your friends are assholes You should just read a book but you want to belong you want to belong so much You don’t know You don’t know You don’t know How to sleep anymore You’ve got means and knowledge You should go to college So far you’ll have to fly Take it up with your teacher He’s a pair of sneakers He’s a Yankees cap and tie But you don’t know You don’t know You don’t know How to talk anymore Ever get the feeling That you’re out of season? Can’t remember what you’re on Here’s a tip to remember Throw your phone in the blender And step into the sun
