Shelter in Place

from The Pause by Pursesnatchers

/

about

Written and recorded March 18-20, 2020, back home in NYC from a cancelled tour, as orders came down to shelter in place. I wrote the song over a loop from an Arthur Russell song I had been listening to incessantly while driving around the midwest earlier in the week.

lyrics

Lock ourselves in and lose the key
Now we dream of how things used to be

Touch my face, I’ll touch your face
There’s something in the air between us, babe

Every second of your life goes ticking by
The terror in your voice matches the flat affect in mine
Every optimist was wrong
We’re living in the twilight zone

Shelter in place like criminals
Or rich kids drowning in their swimming pools

Writing songs to pass the time
Lying low was our big sacrifice

Every second of your life goes ticking by
The terror in your voice matches the flat affect in mine
Birds are singing in their nests
The cognitive dissonance is deafening, I guess
Every optimist was wrong
We’re living in the twilight zone
