Maintain Speed

from The Pause by Pursesnatchers

/

about

I began writing and recording this one in October, 2019. Finished it in mid-June, 2020. The lyrics didn't change much between October and June, they just accidentally became relevant.

lyrics

I never knew when I was five
That nuclear winter would end my life
Until my mom’s eyes met mine
In the rearview mirror one time
She told me the end was nigh

The sign says maintain speed
We try to maintain speed
Everybody gets a chance to steer
We’ll need a little luck to climb these hills
The crosswinds are fierce

Cicadas like a drum machine
On an island where we have no right to be
We’ll find a secret hiding place
Like nobles waiting out a plague
A drill for the end of days

The sign says maintain speed
We try to maintain speed
Everybody gets a chance to steer
We’ll need a little luck to climb these hills
The crosswinds are fierce

How can anyone even have kids
I don’t know but I’m glad that I did
My son loves the stories that pass through time
My daughter sees everyone’s love inside
They make art out of life

The sign says maintain speed
We try to maintain speed
Everyone takes a turn at the wheel
We’ll need a little luck climbing up these hills
The crosswinds are fierce
